Credit Unions Appreciate Their Members and It Shows
By Cyndi Cohen Credit Unions Online
As a credit union member, you know and understand well the meaning of appreciation. Unlike many other consumers these days, you truly appreciate your financial institution. You appreciate better rates on loans, higher yields on savings, and lower fees on transactions as well as helpful advice, superior member service, and personal attention. You appreciate being involved in a movement dedicated to providing quality, affordable financial services while operating under the philosophy of “people helping people.” As part of a financial co-op you recognize and appreciate the credit union difference – you feel there is someone really looking out for your financial well-being.
The one thing you may not realize is how much your credit union appreciates you too, as well as the rest of the individuals who make up their member base. For credit unions who are member-owned and member-run, members are what it’s all about! With loyal members, a credit union can continue to do what it is historically known for – providing top-notch service while educating and bettering local communities and the people who live there. And, as long as credit unions have been in existence, they have been celebrating and showing this deep appreciation for their members in many ways.
Happy Member Appreciation Day from Your Credit Union
Following in tradition’s footsteps, today’s credit unions continue creating new and different types of Member Appreciation celebrations, incorporating exciting elements of modern day culture but staying true to the age-old message…’thank you for your membership.’
City Credit Union (Dallas, TX) has been hosting Member Appreciation Days for years. According to Taunya Williams, Chief Marketing Officer, celebrations begin in March and run through June. The events that are held at branch locations and attended by the Credit Union’s Board of Directors, CEO, and Senior Management group, feature assorted refreshments, various specialty items given away throughout the day, plus two grand prize drawings. Occasionally they include a live radio remote to add to the festivities.
Mortgage Loan, Financial Services, and Financial Education experts are on site to provide specific information and one-on-one counseling with members. Strategically advertised to members as well as to local Chambers and city officials, the events are very well attended.
Sharon Moore, President/CEO of City Credit Union says that she appreciates the loyalty of its members, and they look forward to honoring them each year through their Member Appreciation Days. “The events are always a lot of fun and our staff works very hard to make sure each event is special. By far, the best part is meeting and talking to our members, many of whom attend these events year after year.”
DuTrac Community Credit Union (Dubuque, IA) provides 7-8 Member Appreciation Day events, or MADs, annually. According to Jason Norton, Senior Vice President of Marketing/Business Development, DuTrac’s senior management, marketing and branch teams cook complimentary bbq style food onsite which is always a member favorite! Often, DuTrac partners with Dairy Queen to provide ice cream treats with a portion of the proceeds from the sale of ice cream going to Children’s Miracle Network or local charities. The events are usually held at a branch location on summer Fridays during an extended lunch period, perhaps from 10-3 and may start earlier and/or be extended later.
The credit union has offered promotions such as its relationship checking account called EcoPlus, which provides loan discounts and savings premiums as well as ATM surcharge reimbursements. On average, a typical DuTrac member with EcoPlus saves about $300 annually. In addition, DuTrac’s youth program, called the Savasaurus Club, is often a MAD highlight. Depending on weather and time of year, Sunny, the Savasaurus Club mascot, can be seen on-site along with games or fun-filled events for youth.
DuTrac’s MADs have amazing turnouts often with well over 500 members and community residents stop at a single event. As a new feature for 2012, DuTrac plans to offer document shredding at their upcoming events in Dubuque and Davenport.
“DuTrac believes in giving back to its members in as many ways as we can…a Member Appreciation Day is but one way of giving back to the communities DuTrac services as well as form life-long relationships with DuTrac’s members and potential members,” says Norton.
United Heritage Credit Union (Austin, TX) holds Member Appreciation Days in their Austin and Tyler area locations. According to Jenny Laudadio, Marketing Director, the Austin event sells out within hours of tickets being available with over 960 tickets to this year’s event sold in 5.5 hours. And, last year’s event in Tyler had between 200 and 300 people in attendance for the festivities.
It is no surprise that the credit union’s Austin-area event is a sell-out. It features $4 tickets to a Round Rock Express baseball game which gives members a ticket to the game, free parking, food, drink, ice cream, pool access, 3 face painters, 1 balloon artist, a giveaway item, and a chance to win one of 20 door prizes. In addition, ticket sale proceeds are donated to United Heritage’s Charity Foundation.
The all-day festivities in the Tyler branch include complimentary food, drinks, giveaway items, plinko game and prizes, the chance to win door prizes including a 46” TV or New iPad, and chair massages from 10am – 1pm.
